Specialist Communications Technician
About The Role:
Based in Whyalla, the Specialist Communications Technician will support the critical communications infrastructure that keeps our mining and steel manufacturing operations connected.
You will install, maintain, troubleshoot and optimise critical data, voice and communications networks across both the Whyalla Steelworks and South Middleback Ranges mining operations.
Working across fixed plant and mobile open-cut mining environments, you will support a diverse range of communications technology including IP networks, wireless systems, fibre, radio communications, CCTV, telemetry and remote communications infrastructure. Your work will directly support the reliability of production, safety and automation systems across our operations.

Key Responsibilities:
- Install, configure and maintain IP networks, switches, wireless mesh systems and communications infrastructure.
- Perform preventative maintenance and fault-finding across structured cabling, fibre optic links and network equipment.
- Maintain intercom, PA, CCTV and process camera systems across operational sites.
- Install, maintain and troubleshoot analogue and digital two-way radio systems and fleet communications equipment.
- Service remote infrastructure including microwave links, telemetry networks and solar/battery DC power systems.
- Diagnose faults using electrical schematics, network diagrams and communications testing equipment.
- Maintain accurate work orders and technical documentation while adhering to site safety, isolation and risk assessment requirements
About You:
- Trade qualified in Data and Voice Communications, Electrotechnology, Auto Electrical, Electronics and Communications, or a related discipline.
- Hold an unrestricted ACMA Open Cabler's Registration with Structured Cabling and Optical Fibre endorsements.
- Hands-on technical experience within mining, heavy manufacturing, industrial processing or large-scale logistics environments.
- Strong experience across industrial RF, digital radio and IP network deployment.
- Confident fault-finding across 12/24V DC mobile electrical systems, vehicle RF cabling and communications infrastructure.
- Comfortable using network configuration and communications testing equipment, including OTDRs and spectrum analysers.
- Safety focused and comfortable working across fixed plant and field environments, with a current Australian C-Class Driver's Licence
