Senior Metallurgist

About the role

In this pivotal, fast-paced role, you will be responsible for the safe delivery of planned production volumes and quality at the Fixed Plant’s Concentrator, and Crushing & Screening Plants. The Concentrator (2.2MTpa capacity) comprises grinding (HPGR, Ball mill and Isa mill units), magnetic separation, slurry thickening & pumping, and tailings disposal facilities. The Crushing Plant (8.2MTpa capacity) has jaw & cone crushers, plus screen sizing.

The role is accountable for providing the operating strategy and support for operational improvement work.

Your main duties will include:

  • Provide technical solutions for process and operational issues that may impact on plant performance through the use of standardised problem solving techniques
  • Regular plant inspections and monitoring processing plant performance to aid in process optimisation – availability, rate, quality, and cost, among others
  • Identify new opportunities to improve the performance of the plants and manage projects or implement changes to the plant processes to achieve step improvements
  • Maintain & revise as required Work Instructions which describe the operating control strategy of the plants
  • Mentoring junior Metallurgists, and knowledge sharing with peers and plant personnel.

About your experience

We are looking for an effective decision-maker and a strong problem-solver, who can engage with people.

You will also bring to this role:

  • Tertiary degree qualifications in Metallurgy, or Process Engineering
  • Demonstrated experience working within a primary ore processing environment, minimum 5 years’ experience preferred
  • Sound understanding of primary metallurgical processes
  • Strong troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to work within a team environment.

SIMEC Mining, a member of GFG Alliance, has operations in SA and NSW.  Our Iron Ore mining operations in South Australia’s Middleback Ranges, south of Whyalla, consist of three primary mine sites: Iron Baron, Iron Knob and the South Middleback Ranges.  Administration functions and ore processing and shipping facilities are located within the city limits of Whyalla, with corporate functions based in Adelaide.

The Iron Ore business is on an exciting trajectory to expand our mining and processing operations with significant investment over the next three years. Our operations in Tahmoor NSW produce metallurgical coal for the steel making process where the business is currently investing to expand and extend the life of the operations.
