Safety Specialist - Whyalla
About the role
The Safety Specialist contributes to the success of Liberty Primary Steel (LPS) through the advice, support and mentoring on the full range of operational and strategic safety issues to the operational workforce inclusive of contracting groups.
The Safety Specialist supports a safety maturity and improvement culture and demonstrates behaviours consistent with Company values.
Key responsibilities:

Drive operational excellent in safety management practices through proactive engagement, guidance and support

Build capability amongst leaders and teams to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with legislative obligations and requirements of the LPS Safety Management System

Identify and recommend best practice initiatives to reduce risk, raise safety awarementss and improve safe work practices

Implement and monitor compliance with safe systems of work through safety engagements, interactions, observations and inspections

Support the critical risk and control verification process to ensure all risks are identified and effectively controlled

Support frontline leaders with ICAM investigation process

Work closely with and support other team members and undertake other duties as required to deliver optimal WHS outcomes

Maintain and up to date knowledge of current WHS legislations and standards to provide relevant advice and support

Coordinate and conduct hazard identification and risk assessments within the business where more complex tools are required
Our ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a rapidly changing environment with a drive and resourcefulness to research and find solutions to challenging issues, as well as implement any required changes. Ability to work with people at all levels, be focused and results oriented, organised, take action and be highly autonomous with a sense of urgency.
Experience and qualifications:

Current drivers licence (car)

Tertiary WHS Qualifications or suitable qualifications in relevant discipline

Strong understanding of legislation/regulations, risk and safety management, auditing, reporting and investigation requirements.

Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment with relevant industry experience in safety training delivery (desirable)

Proven ability to engage and influence stakeholders and build effective working relationships

Ability to develop and manage health and safety management systems
-
Experience in facilitating incident investigations and risk assessments

The integrated facility which includes ironmaking, steel making, and rolling-mill facilities is Australia’s only manufacturer of special grade billet and steel long products providing solutions for nation-building infrastructure including rail. It is also the future home of green steel with plans to construct an Electric Arc Furnace and Direct Reduction Iron facility fed by natural gas and hydrogen as part of the GFG’s journey to be carbon neutral by 2030.
