Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement Manager

About the role

The primary governance of this key leadership role is to analyse and improve both manufacturing and organisational processes at the Whyalla Steelworks, with the aim of making them as efficient as possible.  Coaching, research, and analysis feature heavily in this role as you plan, implement, and lead the continuous improvement program from idea to completion.


As the Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement Manager, you will 

  • Drive cultural change of continuous improvement across the business
  • Identify improvement opportunities by analyzing current processes and performance gaps
  • Investigate root causes of critical problems, develop work plans, and track progress through the application of lean principles and the Six Sigma DMAIC problem solving methodology  
  • Coordinate workshops with multiple teams to build and manage improvement project pipeline, that supports achievement of the Business Balance Plan
  • Facilitate the improvement program review cadence meetings with both work streams and senior leaders
  • As a key member of the business unit leadership team, assist the Business Unit Manager in achieving the business performance targets
  • Coach and mentor team members on process improvement methodologies 

About your experience

Our ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to take the lead in implementing changes and acting as a leader, manager, and coach/ mentor throughout different business unit areas within our organisation.

You also have:

  • Degree in an Engineering, Metallurgy or Science Discipline, ideally
  • Solid experience in a processing or manufacturing environment, ideally in an operational or technical leadership position
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with Continuous Improvement processes and tools, as well as structured problem-solving skills
  • Lean Six-Sigma Green belt or above
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate workshops to engage cross-functional groups
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Exposure to iron and steel making processes is highly regarded
  • Be Gemba oriented!
