Mechanical Supervisor

About the role

As the Mechanical Services Workshop Leader for our Whyalla operations, you will lead a team of skilled technicians, ensuring maintenance and repair work is completed efficiently, safe, and to the highest standard. With a hands on approach, strong leadership, and a commitment to safety, you’ll ensure the workshop runs smoothly while identifying opportunities for innovation and efficiency.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead daily workshop operations for the Fitting and Machining Services department, ensuring a safe, productive, and high-quality work environment.

  • Supervise and support a team of tradespeople, fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

  • Manage and monitor workshop budgets, including labor, materials, and operational costs, aligning with asset strategies and cost control objectives.

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality control standards, conducting audits and leading by example in safe work practices.

  • Coordinate job scheduling, resource planning, and workflow optimization to meet maintenance and production deadlines.

  • Utilize SAP or similar systems for job tracking, inventory management, maintenance planning, and reporting.

  • Apply trade or engineering expertise (mechanical trade qualification or engineering degree) to support hands-on problem solving and technical guidance.

About Us

Liberty Primary Steel operates the historic Whyalla Steelworks, approximately 400km from Adelaide.  The integrated facility which includes ironmaking, steel making, and rolling-mill facilities is Australia’s only manufacturer of special grade billet and steel long products providing solutions for nation-building infrastructure including rail. It is also the future home of green steel with plans to construct an Electric Arc Furnace and Direct Reduction Iron facility fed by natural gas and hydrogen as part of the GFG’s journey to be carbon neutral by 2030.
