About the role

Join a pivotal role in the evolution of SIMEC Mining operations, focusing on the development and management of Australia’s highest-quality magnetite resources. Current projects will lead to the production of world-class magnetite concentrate, setting a new benchmark for quality. This role will directly contribute to GREENSTEEL’s ambitions, supporting both the Whyalla steelworks and our global customer base.


With planning now complete, we are seeking a Manager Mining to play a key role in overseeing the current contract mining operation and leading the transition to an owner-miner model.


In this position, you will collaborate closely with the mining contractor, the expansion project team, and various support functions to ensure a safe, efficient, and successful transition to an owner-operated mining operation.


Responsibilities include but not limited to:

 

  • Lead the mining transformation activities for the Magnetite Expansion Project, Stage 1 (MEP1) transforming the current contracted operation to an owner miner
  • Work with project team and HR to establish and recruit the mining organisational structure, including key mining and maintenance personnel
  • Implement and enforce a proactive Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) culture and a safe and healthy work environment for the mining function
  • Establish and implement a training plan for onboarding of and continued skills development of mining workforce
  • Coach and mentor mining teams to develop capability and ensure sustainable succession planning
  • Ensure your department and contract services’ full compliance with mining legislation/regulations and all SIMEC and site people, safety, technical, operating and business systems
  • Act as operations lead and provide support to the Growth Team into studies for implementation of future (MEP2, MEP3) expansion projects
  • Support the General Manager-Iron Ore Operations and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to develop aligned strategies, plans and targets across the Whyalla sites including the development and management of the mining department’s short, medium and long term plans and annual budgets
  • Drive Asset Optimization and Continuous Improvement programs for mining operations
  • Be accountable for creating and maintaining an effective Mining team to achieve the plans and targets whilst continuing to improve performance.


We are seeking a candidate with exceptional communication and influencing skills, capable of providing valuable advice and negotiating effectively across all management levels. You will also possess the flowing:

 

  • Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
  • Strong understanding and compliance with Health, Safety and Environment and relevant legislative requirements
  • Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency/First Class Mine Manager’s Ticket in line with South Australian Mining legislation or ability to obtain
  • 10+ years’ experience in mining operations in leadership positions and >$300M per year Budget Capital and OPEX spend,
  • Sound understanding of truck & shovel operations, integrated mine planning & scheduling and drill & blast optimisation as well as a deep understanding of mining & processing overall
  • Demonstrated experience with contract & contractor management and/or owner mining operations, with success in effectively managing costs and performance of outsourced/insourced mining operations
  • Demonstrated leadership and change management capability

SIMEC Mining Iron Ore has operations in South Australia and New South Wales. Our Iron Ore operation in South Australia’s Middleback Ranges South of Whyalla consists of three primary sites: Iron Baron, Iron Knob and the South Middleback Ranges.
