Crane Technician

About The Role:

We’re on the lookout for a skilled and motivated Crane Technician to join our team. In this role, you’ll play a critical part in keeping our cranes operating safely and efficiently across the Whyalla Steelworks and Mining businesses.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a fitting or boilermaking background who have exposure to machinery inspections and maintenance works. Previous crane maintenance experience is a bonus but not essential — we will provide comprehensive training and induction to crane inspection and maintenance requirements, helping you quickly get up to speed and excel in this specialised role.

This is an excellent opportunity for mechanically minded tradespeople to build on their existing expertise and develop specialist skills in a supportive, safety-focused environment.

Employee Benefits:

  • Be part of a team that values your expertise and supports your growth and development
  • Shape the future of industry in a company committed to sustainability and innovation
  • We cultivate an inclusive workplace that is as diverse as the communities we serve
  • Live, Work and Play in one location

Your day-to-day:

  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance on overhead cranes, hoists, jib cranes, and lifting gear
  • Respond promptly and safely to emergency repair needs
  • Complete inspection checklists, document defects, and recommend corrective actions
  • Collaborate with planning teams on maintenance scheduling
  • Contribute to safety investigations and continuous improvement initiatives

What you’ll bring:

  • Recognised trade qualification in Fitting, Boilermaking, or a related mechanical trade
  • Strong technical knowledge of machinery inspections and maintenance
  • Exposure to heavy industry environments — past experience with crane maintenance is highly regarded but not essential
  • Familiarity with Australian Standards, WHS regulations, and industry best practices
  • A strong safety mindset, clear communication skills, and excellent customer focus
  • Confidence using SAP and MS Office tools

To be successful you’re:

  • Eager to upskill in crane inspection and maintenance, with training provided to be deemed competent by our Principal Crane Engineer
  • Skilled in inspection reporting and fault analysis
  • Thriving in a fast-paced, high-responsibility environment
  • Comfortable working at heights from mobile equipment
