Category Manager
About the role
We are seeking a proactive and commercially astute Category Manager – Services to support Whyalla Steelworks and SIMEC Mining (approximately 60 km south of Whyalla). This services-focused role is responsible for managing mining-related and broader services contracts, overseeing pricing and rate negotiations, and driving value through strategic procurement. Working closely with Buyers and Category Managers, you will play a key role in ensuring competitive, compliant, and sustainable supplier arrangements that support both Mining and Primary Steel operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage contracts related to mining and associated services.
- Lead rate, pricing, quotation, and payment term negotiations.
- Develop and implement category management and sourcing plans aligned with business needs.
- Conduct spend analysis and establish/maintain outline agreements in SAP.
- Collaborate with Buyers and fellow Category Managers to optimise procurement outcomes.
- Oversee contract performance, compliance, and dispute resolution, ensuring value delivery.
- Provide procurement advice and support to operational and management stakeholders.
- Maintain strong supplier and contractor relationships to ensure safety, quality, and efficiency.
About You
- 3–5 years’ procurement experience, ideally in the mining or manufacturing industry
- Tertiary qualifications in Business, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline.
- Strong commercial acumen with proven negotiation and contract management experience.
- Proficiency in SAP (particularly spend analysis, outline agreements, and payment terms) and Microsoft Office.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
- Commitment to safety, governance, and continuous improvement.
Desirable Skills
- Mining procurement or services category management experience.
- Knowledge of national and international services markets and key cost drivers.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and influence cross-functional teams.
- Current driver’s licence and ability to travel as required.
