SIMEC Mining, a member of GFG Alliance, has operations in SA and NSW. Our Iron Ore operation in South Australia’s Middleback Ranges South of Whyalla consist of three primary sites: Iron Baron, Iron Knob and the South Middleback Ranges. The Alliance also owns a portfolio of non-ferrous mining assets located in South Australia. This includes the Ardrossan Dolomite Mine – which supplies dolomite flux to Liberty’s Whyalla Steelworks – as well as a collection of copper-gold exploration projects. Whyalla is a diverse coastal community based approximately 400 km from Adelaide.

About the role

Reporting to the Lead Metallurgist, as Process Control Engineer you will contribute to our success as part of the onsite operations team. Working across multiple disciplines with an exciting mix of project work alongside the day-to-day operations, you will gain exposure to the mining side of the business. The three fixed plants at the South Middleback Ranges are the Crushing and Screening Plant, Hematite Ore Beneficiation Plant and Magnetite Concentrator.

You will:

  • Provide process control support, programming and operational improvements for the SMR fixed plants
  • Address a significant proportion of our critical control loops and push the Concentrator forward to align with forecast targets
  • Implement process control changes to ensure these improvements are sustainable in the long term
  • Use historical plant data to investigate process and equipment performance issues or failures, then propose and implement solutions
  • Identify and implement process control and diagnostic information improvement projects
  • Work with internal stakeholders to ensure reporting and management of the site meets our safety vision.


This role works Monday-Friday approx. 7am-3pm.

About your experience

To be successful in the role, you will need to hit the ground running as the expert in your field onsite. We would love to speak with candidates who have computer control system experience as well as:

  • A formal qualification in Chemical Engineering, Process Control Engineering or similar
  • Several years of demonstrated operational experience in process control engineering in heavy industry
  • A metallurgist background would be viewed favourably.
